The short answer

A plain 5 ft “wrought iron” fence — almost always tubular steel — costs about $30–$55 per foot installed, roughly $4,500–$8,250 for 150 ft before gates. Spear tops, scrolls and genuine forged iron push it up sharply. Set your own fence below.

Wrought iron fence cost per foot by type, height and ornamentation

Every combination the calculator prices, as text. Figures are installed per linear foot for the fence alone on flat ground at national-average labour; gates and tear-out are separate. Each cell opens the calculator set to that fence.

Wrought iron, ornamental iron, ornamental steel and “rod iron” are usually the same tubular steel product — the naming is explained, with the restore-or-replace maths for an existing fence, in wrought iron fence cost.

How the estimate is built

  • Type sets the base range — the same tubular steel, cast iron and true wrought iron ranges the wrought iron cost guide publishes, from one dataset. They describe a plain flat-top panel at 5 ft.
  • Height scales it with the same steps every calculator on the site uses: 4 ft about 11% below 5 ft, 6 ft about 11% above.
  • Ornamentation is the premium the guide publishes: spear or finial tops +10–20%, rings and scrolls +20–40%, custom fabrication +50–100%. Ornamenting only the street-facing run and keeping the rest plain is the usual way to cut it.
  • Rust protection is not an input, but it decides how long the fence lasts. Ask whether the steel is galvanized under the powder coat — that layer, not the paint, is what stops rust spreading from a chip.

Local rules vary. Spikes and pointed tops can carry liability on a fence by a public path, and some towns restrict them on front-yard fences. Check before you specify spear tops — fence rules and height limits.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the cost of a wrought iron fence?
Linear feet × a per-foot rate for the type and height, plus ornamentation and gates per unit. Plain 5 ft tubular steel is about $30–$55/ft, so 150 ft is roughly $4,500–$8,250.
How much is a wrought iron fence per foot?
About $30–$55/ft for plain 5 ft tubular steel, $33–$66 with spear tops. True forged iron starts near $50.
How much does 200 feet of wrought iron fence cost?
Roughly $6,000–$11,000 for 200 ft of plain 5 ft tubular steel, before gates.
How much does a wrought iron fence cost for a front yard?
Roughly $2,933–$5,867 for 100 ft at 4 ft with spear tops. See front yard fence cost for height limits.
Is wrought iron more expensive than aluminum?
Usually — and steel needs rust care aluminum doesn't. See aluminum vs wrought iron.
