Choose aluminum if you never want to deal with rust — it's cheaper, maintenance-free, and the standard pool fence. Choose wrought iron (in practice, tubular steel) for genuine strength and security, accepting repainting every 8–10 years. Rust tolerance decides this one.
How Aluminum and Wrought Iron really differ
These look nearly identical from the street and behave completely differently over time. Aluminum doesn't corrode; steel does. Everything else — cost, weight, installation, repairability — follows from that one fact. Worth knowing before you shop: most fencing sold as “wrought iron” today is hollow tubular steel, not forged iron, so you're usually comparing aluminum against powder-coated steel.

The decisive factor. Aluminum simply cannot rust, so upkeep is washing it. Steel is protected only by its coating — once that's chipped by a mower or a stone, corrosion starts there. Expect annual touch-ups and a repaint every 8–10 years, sooner near the coast.

Aluminum runs $28–$55 per linear foot installed against steel's $30–$65, so aluminum is modestly cheaper upfront — and meaningfully cheaper to own once repainting is counted. Genuine forged iron is a different tier entirely at $50–$100+.
Strength and security
Steel wins clearly. It resists cutting, impact, and force far better, which is why it's the choice where security genuinely matters. Aluminum is softer — a vehicle or falling branch bends pickets that steel would shrug off — though commercial-grade aluminum narrows the gap.
Pools and coastal sites

Weight and installation
Aluminum is light enough for straightforward posts and easier handling; steel is heavy and needs more substantial footings, which adds labour. Steel does have one repair advantage: it can be welded, where a damaged aluminum section is usually replaced.

From the kerb, powder-coated in the same black, they are hard to tell apart — which is precisely why aluminum sells. Up close the difference is mass: steel's sections are visibly heavier, its finials more substantial, and it doesn't flex when you push it. Aluminum can read slightly thin next to genuine ironwork, and against a period house that gap is more noticeable than a photograph suggests.
Sloped ground
Aluminum has a practical edge here. Most residential aluminum systems rack — the pickets pivot so the panel follows the grade with no gap underneath — while heavier steel panels more often have to be stepped down the slope, leaving triangular gaps that matter for both dogs and pool code. On a genuinely sloped yard, ask both quotes which method they assume.
Lifespan and what actually fails
Both outlast most other fencing: aluminum 30–50 years, steel 40–70 and longer for forged iron. But they fail differently, and that shapes the maintenance you're signing up for. Steel's coating is the only thing standing between the metal and corrosion, so neglect is cumulative — the fence you ignore for fifteen years is a repaint on aluminum and a restoration on steel.
Repair and replacement
Steel is the more repairable material by a wide margin — it can be cut, welded, and refinished section by section, which is why century-old iron fences are still standing and worth restoring rather than replacing. Aluminum sections are generally swapped out instead, which is fast and cheap but depends on the manufacturer still making a matching profile a decade later. Ask about parts availability if the fence is going somewhere a vehicle might reach it.
The twenty-year cost, where they actually separate
Upfront these two are close — a few dollars a foot apart, which is well inside the spread between two honest quotes. The separation happens afterwards, and it's entirely about the coating.
Aluminum's line goes flat at installation and stays there: there is nothing to do to it. Steel's keeps climbing, because a full repaint every 8–10 years runs roughly $8–$20 per linear foot — on 200 feet, $1,600 to $4,000, twice inside twenty years. That's the real price of steel, and it isn't on any quote.
Two things this doesn't capture. It assumes the repainting happens; a neglected steel fence doesn't save the money, it converts it into a larger restoration bill later. And it stops at twenty years, which flatters aluminum — steel and genuine iron keep going for decades beyond that, so on a house you intend to hand down, the maintained steel fence may still be standing when the aluminum is on its second replacement.
