The short answer

A 6 ft pressure-treated pine privacy fence costs about $18–$35 per foot installed — roughly $2,700–$5,250 for a 150 ft back yard before gates. Cedar adds 40–60%, board-on-board 25–30%. Set your own length, wood, style and height below.

Wood fence cost per foot by species and style

The calculator's per-foot figures, printed as text. Privacy styles are priced at 6 ft, picket at 4 ft, each for the fence alone on flat ground at national-average labour — gates and tear-out are separate lines. Every cell opens the calculator set to that fence.

How the estimate is built

  • Species sets the base. The per-foot ranges for a 6 ft privacy fence by species are the ones the wood fence cost guide publishes — they come from one dataset, so the two can't disagree.
  • Style scales it. Board-on-board uses roughly a quarter more boards and labour than butted stockade; shadowbox a little less than that; spaced pickets less than either. These multipliers are modelled from published style ranges — the ordering is reliable, the exact percentage is an assumption.
  • Height, ground and region adjust it. 8 ft costs about 30% more than 6 ft (bigger posts, deeper holes); slopes add 15% and rock 30%, because the posts are the hard part; high-cost regions add about 20%.
  • Gates, tear-out and staining are separate lines — gates at $200–$700 each for a walk gate, tear-out at $3–$8 per foot, the way contractors bill them.

Local rules vary. Height limits, setbacks and permit triggers are local, and HOAs often dictate which side of the fence faces out. Check both before ordering lumber — fence permit basics.

Doing it yourself instead

Materials are roughly half to two-thirds of an installed wood fence. If you're weighing DIY, the picket and material calculator gives you the lumber list for the same fence, and DIY vs hiring covers what the labour line is really worth once you count tool rental, concrete and a second weekend.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the cost of a wood fence?
Linear feet × a per-foot rate for your species and style, adjusted for height, plus gates per unit. 6 ft pine privacy is about $18–$35/ft, so 150 ft is roughly $2,700–$5,250 before gates.
How much does a 100 ft wood privacy fence cost?
About $1,800–$3,500 in 6 ft pine, or $2,500–$5,500 in cedar, before gates.
How much more does a cedar fence cost than pine?
Roughly 40–60% more: $3,750–$8,250 for 150 ft of cedar against $2,700–$5,250 in pine.
Is board-on-board worth the extra cost?
It runs about 25–30% more than stockade. It buys privacy that doesn't degrade — butted boards open gaps as they dry; overlapping boards never do.
Does the calculator include staining?
Optionally — about $3–$8/ft for one side of a 6 ft fence. For DIY gallons, use the fence stain calculator.
